Week 7

Lecture

Today Mr Fauzi touched on colour theory. Colour theory is both a science and art of using colours. RGB colours are used to display on our computer screen, and CMYK is used for printing.

Figure 1: RGB vs CMYK, Week 7 (4/10/21)

RGB is an additive colour mixing model, the colours are mixed as light sources. CMYK is a subtractive colour mixing model, it is created by a subtraction of light.

There are a number of ways to create colour harmony:
  • Monochromatic (1 main colour)
  • Analogous (3 main colours, where 1 usually dominates)
  • Complementary (colours opposite the colour wheel)
  • Split-complementary (similar to complementary, but instead of taking 1 colour from the opposite of the colour wheel, take the 2 colours beside it)
  • Triadic (colours that are evenly spaced in the colour wheel)
The psychology of colours: Each colour has its own meaning. While what some colours represent is subjective, some colours have universal meaning. An example:

Tutorial

For tutorial we were instructed to apply more advanced re-colouring with different layer masks. A video was given for us to follow.

Practical

For the first exercise, we had to use Figure 3. The image reference for her skin and hair were also given.

After following the video and experimenting my own layers and colours, I ended up with Figure 4. For some reason, this image was very satisfying to look at (could it be her visuals? the flow of her hair? her expression? the power of looks man)

The next exercise was to choose a black and white image of our choice from the Google Drive, find our own reference and re-colour it. I decided to take something that has more detail, something a little challenging. I came across Figure 5 and felt that the beautiful details of her traditional outfit will be fun to re-colour.

Figure 5: Black and white photo2, Week 7 (5/10/21)

This one took many more layers than the first image. The first tricky part was to get her skin tone right - I didn't want the skin to ruin the aesthetic of the entire image. Other intricate details include the embroidery on her shirt, her makeup and the semi-transparent scarf. I realized I resorted to use the brush tool to mask certain areas a lot as the magic wand didn't want to cooperate with me. The references for her hair, skin and outfit is in Figure 6.

Thus, with the reference and many many layers later, the outcome:

Overall, I'm quite proud of it :D
