REFLECTION
The whole experience with this module has been really positive overall. There were so many new things to pick up, to learn, to do etc... Typography was an aspect of design I rarely ever touch so this module was great exposure to that, in a way. The variety of tasks definitely made the module very interesting to follow along, a very refreshing way of going around modules (as compared to Computer Science). The weekly feedback sessions definitely helped a lot. Mr Vinod and Mr Charles are a complementary duo, both eager to help us improve and having great enthusiasm towards the subject, which encourages us to push our boundaries and limits. The downsides could possibly be the tough balance between the number of lectures, blogging, and the actual workload. It may be too overwhelming for a student who's starting out fresh in design. Maybe not all feedback has to be held back.
This module may be one of the most in-depth modules to be taught. From the lectures to the exercises; every task had its purpose, even if it doesn't explicitly show in the initial stages. I did not expect that much emphasis on a well-documented blog, and to show progress but I guess it instills a good discipline to put some thought behind every motive or design. Quite a lot is packed into one semester, to be honest, but I found myself working harder and, in a way, garnered a sense of always wanting to push my own boundaries. Maybe too, as a by-product, I now get very picky about the typography I see in everyday life.
Findings! I've found many findings through this module - from the Adobe software to the annoying bits of FontLab, it has all helped me gain a deeper understanding of how fonts and types work, and a much much greater appreciation for how typography actually impacts a design a lot more than we give credit to. While it doesn't take long to whip up some text and slap some colour on it, it takes tons of practice to make it display the way it was intended to, with its own designer's flair and message. If there's the best thing I've learnt from this module, it would be that there is intent and purpose behind every stroke and kern. I think that will be a philosophy that influences my future creations.
